Contribute to Australiana

Australiana welcomes new contributors and publishes original research into Australian art, decorative arts, manufactures and material culture. We encourage articles that are engaging, well illustrated and contribute to our understanding of Australian objects and their historical, social and cultural contexts.

Published quarterly in February, May, August and November, Australiana is a full-colour journal available by subscription.

Whether you have a completed article or an idea you would like to explore, we encourage you to get in touch with the editor.

We welcome contributions from researchers, collectors, curators and anyone with an interest in Australian material culture. Articles may explore individual objects, collections, makers or broader subjects, provided they offer original research and place their subject in context.

You are welcome to contact the editor with a proposal, a brief outline or a draft, no matter how rough. Articles can be submitted at any time.

Before preparing your submission, please read the Australiana Journal Style Guide. It contains detailed information about article requirements, writing and referencing, images and captions, the editorial process and publication.

A sample article is available to help prospective contributors understand the journal’s approach, presentation and style. Dr James Bertouch’s article on colonial tea caddies won the the Peter Walker Fine Art writer award for 2014, Australiana Volume 36. It appeared in the August 2014 issue of Australiana.
